What a sensitive stomach usually turns out to be
Two different things get called the same name. The first is richness: a food with more fat in it than a particular dog handles well, or a change made too quickly, or a week of table scraps and chews on top of dinner. The second is a specific ingredient the dog reacts to. They look similar in the bowl and they are not the same problem, and the difference decides which bag to reach for.
Richness is the more common of the two, and the easier to test. It is also the one people try last, because a new protein sounds like a bigger change than a lower-fat version of what the dog already eats.
Start with the fat, then look at the protein
Sensitive Care is our lower-fat recipe, made for adult and senior dogs who do better on less. It is a Core Line recipe, so it is built for everyday feeding rather than as a short course — a dog who settles on it can stay on it. It meets the AAFCO profile for adult maintenance.
Two things in it are there for digestion rather than for the label. Chicory root extract is a prebiotic. Yucca schidigera has been used in feed for a long time for the same end. Neither is a cure for anything, and we would rather say what they are than what we wish they did.
If it turns out to be the protein
If the trouble follows the ingredient rather than the richness, the two fish recipes are the shorter list. Each leads with fish and nothing else from the farmyard, so there is less in the bowl to react to and less to guess at afterwards.
Fish Recipe with Zucchini & Carrots is legume-free and built around salmon, whitefish, trout, menhaden and herring. Grain-Free Ocean Fish Meal & Potato is the one to take if you are avoiding grain as well — it is chicken-free and grain-free together, which saves running two trials one after the other.
Sensitive Care contains chicken
Worth saying plainly, because the two problems get muddled constantly. Sensitive Care is a low-fat recipe, not a chicken-free one — chicken meal and chicken fat are both in it. If you already know chicken is the problem, or a vet has suggested taking it out, start on our chicken-free recipes instead. A low-fat food will not help a dog who is reacting to an ingredient it still contains.
Change it slowly, and change one thing at a time
Go more slowly than the back of the bag suggests. A quarter of the new food mixed into the old for several days, then half, then three-quarters, over a week to ten days. A sudden change of diet is itself one of the commonest reasons a dog's stomach turns, so a fast switch can look like the new food failing when it is only the speed of the switch.
And change one thing. New food, new treats and a new chew in the same week tells you nothing about any of them.
When it is not the food at all
Call your vet rather than another bag if there is blood, if your dog cannot keep water down, if it has gone on more than a day or two, or if they are losing weight. Parasites, infections and a dozen other things present the same way, and food is only worth changing once the things food cannot fix have been ruled out.
Questions worth asking
Is a sensitive stomach the same as an allergy?
No, and it matters. A sensitive stomach is usually about richness — too much fat, too sudden a change, too many extras. An allergy is the immune system reacting to a specific ingredient, and it shows up in the skin and ears as often as in the gut. Sensitive Care is a low-fat recipe and it contains chicken; if you are avoiding chicken, start on our chicken-free page instead.
Which of these should I start with?
Sensitive Care, if the trouble seems to follow rich food or a change of diet. One of the fish recipes if you suspect the protein itself. Both are complete foods — neither is a short-term diet.
How do I change my dog over?
Slowly, and more slowly than usual here. Mix a quarter of the new food into the old for several days, then half, then three-quarters, over a week to ten days. A sudden change is itself one of the commonest causes of an upset stomach.
When should I call the vet instead?
