For itchy dogs

Grain-free, chicken-free dog food for the itch you can’t place.

When a dog will not stop scratching and the vet suspects the food, the two ingredients that come up first are almost always chicken and grain. Most bags take out one or the other. These two take out both at once — which is the shortest honest route to finding out whether the food was ever the problem.

Why this line
  • No chicken. At all. Not as the meat, not as a meal, not hidden behind the word “poultry”. Chicken is one of the most commonly reported food allergens in dogs, so it is simply not in the bag.
  • No grain, corn, wheat or soy The other half of the usual advice, done in the same bag rather than in a second trial three months later.
  • Duck, pork and ocean fish Proteins most dogs have simply eaten less of over the years — and ocean fish brings the omega-3s that skin and coat are built from.
  • Made in Wisconsin Mixed and bagged at our own plant in Grafton, where we can see every batch.

Love ANP. Use every version of the fresh market which has no peas, potato and that has helped with my dogs ear infections tremendously. The dogs love it and I like that I can switch flavors to mix it up for them. Great food, happy healthy…

Questions worth asking

Why take out chicken and grain together?

Because they are the two things most often behind a food reaction, and testing them one at a time takes months. Each trial needs six to eight weeks to mean anything, so removing one and then the other is most of a year. Both recipes on this page are free of both, which turns two trials into one. If the scratching settles, you have learned something; if it does not, you have ruled out a great deal in half the time.

Is grain-free better for every dog?

No. Most dogs digest grains perfectly well, and grain-free is not a health upgrade on its own. It is worth trying when a dog shows signs of a food sensitivity — itching, ear trouble, a dull coat — and your vet suggests changing the diet. Talk to them before you switch.

Is it definitely the food?

Often it is not. Fleas, pollen, grass and dust mites all make a dog itch, and they are more common than a food allergy. Food is worth ruling out because it is the one you can change yourself — but start with your vet, not with a bag.

How do I change my dog over?

Slowly. Mix a quarter of the new food into the old for a few days, then half, then three-quarters, over about a week. A sudden change upsets most dogs regardless of what the new food is.

How long before I know if it helped?

Give it six to eight weeks, and feed nothing else — no treats, no table scraps, no flavoured chews. Skin and coat take that long to turn over, and one chicken-flavoured biscuit restarts the clock.
